QUEEN ANNE AND PRINCE GEORGE

We are delighted to be able to display, for the first time, these rare and beautiful examples of Delftware showing Queen Anne and her husband Prince George of Denmark.  The plaques date from 1704 and were given to the Museum as part of the original bequest by Richard Bevan of Horsgate House.

The plaques were made at the Lambeth pottery on the south bank of the Thames using techniques brought to this country by potters from Holland.  The portraits are painted on earthenware and finished with a white opaque tin glaze which allows fine decoration in the familiar Delft blue – in this case showing a close likeness to other portraits of Queen Anne and her husband.  Anne ruled from 1702-1714 so these plaques would have celebrated a new reign.
