“Surprising Sussex

A talk by Chris Horlock, local author and historian.  Chris will cover a wide-ranging mix of little-known Sussex history, featuring people, places and events from many periods.  Included are US President Kennedy’s brief visit to Forest Row just months before he was assassinated; the remarkable Sir John Gage of Firle, one time Constable of the Tower of London; plus prosecutor Lord Shawcross and his involvement with Crawley’s ‘Acid Bath Murderer’ John Haigh.  There are some amusing anecdotes too and the talk ends with the story of Sussex’s most unusual war memorial – a branch from a South African tree.
