NOTABLE PEOPLE

Cuckfield has been home to many interesting and notable people over the years. 

Here are just a few (click on each name to find out more):

  • Richard Bevan (1834-1918), banker and philanthropist.
  • Robert Bevan (1865-1925), a son of Sir Richard and an artist of some reknown who was one of the founders of the Camden Group.
  • Lance Corporal George Botting (1888-1917), killed on the Western Front 1917.
  • Alfred Browne, Easter Sunday Hero who saved the church steeple from fire in 1917.
  • Tommy Cook (1901-1950), played football for Brighton and Hove Albion and England, as well as playing cricket for Sussex.
  • William Herrington, well-respected and much-loved headmaster of Cuckfield National School for 32 years.
  • Nurse Mary Stoner (1855-1947): Cuckfield’s first district nurse.
